Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square) is a square with a panoramic view of Florence, Italy, located in the Oltrarno district. History This Florentine piazza was designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi and built in 1869 on a hill just south of the historic center, during the redevelopment of Oltrarno, the left (south) bank of the Arno river.

The Rose Garden. Located just below the Piazzale Michelangelo, the Rose Garden is one of the loveliest gardens in Florence and probably the most romantic. Built by Giuseppe Poggi in 1865, it includes about 1000 botanical varieties and 350 species of ancient roses. Open all year round from 9.00 am until sunset - with the exception of Christmas.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is an 1860 square by Giuseppe Poggi and is full of replicas of Michelangelo statues, including a second copy of the David (the original is in the Accademia Gallery ). A number of other attractions can be found in the Piazzale Michelangelo District. Just a short walk uphill is the spectacular Romaneque San Miniato Church. An equally short walk down the hill leads to another piazza with a lovely restaurant. Further down, on the route back to central Florence, is a very pretty rose garden.

Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance Man with a multitude of skills - he was an architect, a sculptor, a painter, and a poet. Born in Tuscany, Michelangelo spent his entire life working between Florence and Rome.
